Ok. I had my tonsils and adenoids out 3 days ago and here's how it went...

My appointment was scheduled for 8am, so we arrived at quarter to. I was taken into a small room and told to wait for a nurse. When the nurse came he took me to my bed and told me to get dressed into a gown. Then I was asked lots of questions and my blood pressure was taken. This was my first operation, so by this point I was bricking it!

Basically straight after the questioning they wheeled me into the anaesthetic room where I was asked more questions. Once it was confirmed that they were ready for me I was wheeled into another room. I was given an IV and they put an oxygen mask on me. At this point I started to feel very dizzy and didn't really give a crap about what was happening. The doc told me he was going to put the anaesthetic in and that was the last thing I remember...

I woke up crying (a side affect of general anaesthetics) and preceeded to for about an hour and a half. I don't really remember it being agony, I just couldn't stop crying. After about 40 mins in the recovery room, where I was pumped full of morphine and then taken to my own room. The nurse gave me a cuddle and then my gran came in and calmed me down. My mum and twin sister followed in and I don't really remember much else. I kept drifting in and out of sleep for the whole day and was sick 5 or 6 times (another side effect). I was puking up blood that I had swallowed during the operation and the nurses said this was good that I was getting it out of my system. I didn't feel nauseous, it just suddenly came over me and I was sick then went back to sleep. Eventually in the evening I was given an injection in my bum to stop the sickness which did work, I've not been sick since.

The pain wasn't too bad when I was given painkillers, but when they wore off it was uncomfortable to swallow. I'm not saying it wasn't painful, but more uncomfortable than sore.

The day that I got the op I didn't sleep very well and was up every hour during the night to wee, cause of all the fluid I drank during the day. This is the 3rd day and I'm still on strong painkillers, but basically back to my usual cheerful self!!

I don't know Rusty. But it drives me crazy. Sometimes I just have to abandon a page and start something else. It's almost like I have to get over the idea of drawing poorly before I can draw well. You think Picasso had bad drawing days? Or do you just get over it eventually?

I totally identify with the some days it works and some days it doesn't statement. I wonder why that is. The motor skills should always be there. The same eyes bring the information in. The same brain translates then regurgitates it. So why, can't we consistently produce the kind of images that make us stand back in wonder? There is certainly something magical about it.

Adult tonsillectomy sucks. I had mine at 31, and took 3 weeks to recover before I could even think about eating anything solid. Spent alot of time sleeping and/or doped up. Liquid Vicodin is your friend for this procedure, as is ice water, ice cream, and anything else liquidy and freezing cold. Jaw hurt, ears hurt, neck hurt, head hurt, tongue was swollen, couldn't talk, for about 3-5 days. After that it's just the throat hurting. Don't expect to recover quickly - all that business about going back to work in 3 days...yeah right. Three days after surgery you'll be looking for someone to stab, but you won't be able to because you'll be so doped up on pain meds you'll just end up stabbing yourself...and believe me, you'll want to. All that being said, it was worth it - haven't been sick since.

Hey I am a mother of two and am currently day 8 after my tonsillectomy and I still am having trouble swallowing. I really do not think I had enough information about this procedure before the surgery. If I would of had more information about it I think I might have held off. I too had laser surgery and had the white spots ( still do ) Although for some reason one side of my mouth still has a gaping hole. My mother tries to reassure me that this will close up more with time but right now I fear I may never be able to eat food again because it will all get lost in this huge hole. I unfortunately had allergic reactions to the general anesthesia and therefore could not take pain medications afterwords. I was prescribed codeine, but this caused dizziness and nausea, and then was prescribed supeodol which is narcotic based and this caused vomiting so severe that i was re-hospitalized for a night. So 2 extra strength Tylenol crushed up and swallowed amongst some pudding is all I am aloud. I have to say I am not a happy camper. Good luck to any one else having to undergo this.
